The Stearman-Hammond Y-1 was a utility monoplane produced by the Stearman-Hammond Aircraft Corporation in the 1930s and tested by the US Navy and the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom.

Dean Hammond designed the Hammond Model Y, a low-wing monoplane with twin-boom pusher monoplane, in the early 1930s.

To develop the type for production, Hammond collaborated with aircraft designer Lloyd Stearman.

In 1936, they established the Stearman-Hammond Aircraft Corporation to manufacture the Stearman-Hammond Y-1.

The initial aircraft was powered by a Menasco C-4 piston engine with 125 horsepower (93 kW) and a pusher propeller.

Because the performance was lacking, it was re-engineered with a 150 horsepower (112 kW) Menasco C-4S and renamed the Y-1S.

Despite being planned to be simple to fly, just 20 aircraft were manufactured because to the exorbitant cost.

The tailplane fins were movable but fixed in flight, therefore there was no rudder.

Only the differential aileron and elevator were used to turn the plane.

In 1934, the Bureau of Air Commerce announced a competition for a $700 aircraft that was both safe and practical.

The Stearman-Hammond Y-1 won the competition in 1936, adopting several of the Ercoupe W-1's safety features.

The Waterman Aeroplane and the AC-35, a roadable autogyro from the Autogiro Company of America, were two additional winners.

The bureau placed an order for 25 examples at a cost of $3190 apiece.

The first delivery was deemed unsatisfactory in terms of finish, leading the development of the re-engineered Y-S variant.

The United States Navy used two Y-1S, serial numbers 0908 and 0909, for radio controlled development trials as the JH-1.

On December 23, 1937, at the Coast Guard Air Station in Cape May, New Jersey, a JH-1 drone made a successful unmanned radio-controlled flight.

A land-based radio set was used to regulate takeoff and landing; control of flying manoeuvres was transferred to an airborne TG-2.

KLM bought a Y-1 (PH-APY) to teach their pilots about tricycle undercarriage.

In the 1940s, the Royal Air Force evaluated a former KLM Y-1S.
