The Antonov An-26 is a twin-engine turboprop military transport aircraft developed in the Soviet Union as an evolution of the An-24 series.
Designed by the Antonov Design Bureau, the An-26 first entered service in the late 1960s and was widely adopted by military and government operators around the world.
Distinguished by its rear cargo ramp, the An-26 was designed to support rapid loading and unloading of troops, vehicles, and cargo, as well as airborne supply operations.
The aircraft is capable of operating from short, unprepared runways, making it well suited for tactical transport roles in austere environments.
Powered by two reliable turboprop engines, the An-26 offers robust performance, long range, and excellent endurance.
Its versatility allows it to perform a wide range of missions including troop transport, cargo delivery, medical evacuation, paratroop operations, and navigation training.
Various specialised variants were also produced for electronic warfare, reconnaissance, and calibration duties.
The Antonov An-26 became a backbone tactical transport aircraft for many air forces during the Cold War and beyond, valued for its rugged construction, operational flexibility, and ease of maintenance in demanding conditions.
