Academy 1/200 New Bedford Whaler # 14204
The New Bedford whaler refers to the sturdy, purpose built ships that sailed from the American port of New Bedford during the height of the 19th century whaling industry.
Known as the “City that Lit the World,” New Bedford became the global centre of whaling, with its vessels travelling vast distances in search of whale oil, which was used for lighting and industrial purposes.
These whaling ships were designed for long voyages that could last several years.
Strongly built and highly adaptable, they carried smaller whaleboats that were launched when whales were spotted.
Crews would pursue their quarry in these boats, harpoon the whale, and then tow it back to the main ship for processing.
The ships themselves were equipped with tryworks, large onboard furnaces used to render whale blubber into oil while still at sea.
Life aboard a New Bedford whaler was demanding and often dangerous.
Crews faced harsh weather, long periods away from home, and the risks associated with hunting large marine animals.
Despite these challenges, the industry brought great wealth to New Bedford and played a significant role in the economic growth of the United States during that period.
The legacy of the New Bedford whalers remains an important part of maritime history, reflecting both the ingenuity of ship design and the global reach of 19th century seafaring trade.
