The Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk was an early variant of the famous P-40 fighter, representing a crucial step in the development of one of the most widely used Allied aircraft of the early Second World War.
Entering service in 1941, the P-40C improved upon earlier versions with the addition of self-sealing fuel tanks and better armour protection, addressing vulnerabilities that had been exposed in combat.
Powered by the reliable Allison V-1710 engine, the Tomahawk offered solid performance at low to medium altitudes, making it well-suited to the types of engagements it frequently encountered.
While it lacked the high-altitude capabilities of some contemporary fighters, it proved rugged, dependable, and capable of absorbing significant battle damage.
The P-40C saw action with the United States Army Air Forces as well as Allied nations, most notably with the American Volunteer Group—better known as the “Flying Tigers”—in China.
There, it gained a formidable reputation for its effectiveness against Japanese aircraft, particularly when flown using diving and hit-and-run tactics.
With its distinctive lines and shark-mouth nose art made famous in combat, the Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk remains an iconic symbol of early Allied air power and a testament to practical, battle-hardened fighter design.
