Academy 1/48 Vought F4U-4B Corsair # 12267
The Vought F4U-4B Corsair was one of the final and most formidable piston-engine fighters to see front-line combat.
An evolution of the legendary Corsair family, the -4B variant combined raw power, heavy armament, and rugged carrier capability, making it a dominant force during the early years of the Korean War.
Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, the F4U-4B could reach speeds of over 440 mph, delivering outstanding climb performance and acceleration.
Its distinctive inverted gull wing design—originally developed to accommodate its massive propeller—remained a defining feature, giving the Corsair both strength and unmistakable visual presence.
The -4B variant was specifically armed with four 20mm cannons, replacing the earlier .50 calibre machine guns.
This heavier armament made it exceptionally effective in ground-attack and close air support roles.
The aircraft could also carry rockets, bombs, and drop tanks, enhancing its versatility in combat operations.
During the Korean War, the F4U-4B served primarily with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. While jet aircraft such as the MiG-15 dominated air-to-air combat at high altitude, the Corsair excelled at low-level attack missions, providing vital support to ground forces.
Its durability and firepower earned it great respect among pilots and troops alike.
A true icon of naval aviation, the F4U-4B Corsair represents the pinnacle of piston-engine fighter development — powerful, aggressive, and battle-proven in one of the last conflicts where propeller-driven fighters played a major combat role.
