The IDF Centurion Shot Kal Gimel/Dalet is a variant of the Centurion main battle tank that was used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The Centurion was a British-designed tank that entered service after World War II. Israel acquired a significant number of Centurion tanks and began modifying them to suit their operational requirements. The IDF made several upgrades to the Centurion, resulting in different variants, including the Shot Kal (Khal) Gimel and Shot Kal Dalet.
The Shot Kal Gimel was the first variant developed by the IDF. It featured several improvements over the standard Centurion, including the installation of the 105mm L7 rifled gun, which provided enhanced firepower compared to the original 20-pounder gun. The Shot Kal Gimel also had improved armor protection and additional storage for ammunition.
The Shot Kal Dalet was a further development of the Centurion tank by the IDF. It incorporated various upgrades, such as improved fire control systems and enhanced engine performance. The Shot Kal Dalet also featured explosive reactive armor (ERA) on the turret and hull, which provided additional protection against anti-tank missiles and shaped charge warheads.
Both the Shot Kal Gimel and Shot Kal Dalet tanks were extensively used by the IDF during various conflicts, including the Yom Kippur War in 1973 and subsequent conflicts in the Middle East. These tanks played a significant role in the armored operations of the IDF and were regarded as reliable and effective platforms during their service. However, with the advancement of technology and the introduction of newer tank models, the IDF eventually phased out the Centurion tanks from active service.
