Ace 1/72 Soviet BMP-2D # 72125
The BMP-2 (Boyevaya Mashina Pekhoty literally "Infantry Combat Vehicle") is a second-generation amphibious infantry fighting vehicle developed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s to replace the BMP-1 of the 1960s.
Despite its groundbreaking design, the BMP-1's main armament, the 2A28 Grom and 9S428 ATGM launcher, which could fire 9M14 Malyutka (NATO: AT-3A Sagger A) and 9M14M Malyutka-M (NATO: AT-3B Sagger B) ATGMs, quickly became obsolete.
As a result, the Soviet Union opted to develop an updated and improved BMP-1.
The focus was mostly on enhancing the main armament.
The development of a better variant of the BMP-1 began in 1972.
Egyptian and Syrian BMPs showed vulnerable to.50 calibre machine gun fire in the sides and rear, as well as 106 mm M40 recoilless rifles, during their combat debut in the Yom Kippur War.
The AT-3 Sagger missile could not be guided properly from the limitations of the turret, and the 73 mm gun proved imprecise beyond 500 metres.
Following the war, many Soviet technical teams were dispatched to Syria to gather intelligence.
In 1974, a replacement programme for the first BMP was developed based on these lessons and studies of western AFV advances.
The BMP-1P improvement was the program's first product, and it was designed as a stopgap to fix the most serious flaws in the original design.
The AT-3 Sagger missile system was replaced with the semi-automatically guided AT-4 Spigot / AT-5 Spandrel system, and smoke grenade launchers were installed to the rear of the turret.
By the late 1970s, the BMP-1P was in production, and existing BMP-1s were gradually updated to the standard throughout the 1980s.
BMP-2D (D stands for dorabotanaya – modified)
Added spaced type steel appliqué armour to the hull sides, under the driver's and commander's stations, and 6 mm thick appliqué armour to the turret.
The vehicle is no longer amphibious due to the additional weight.
It also allows for the installation of a mine-clearing system under the vehicle's nose.
It has been in service since 1982 and saw action during the Soviet–Afghan War.
