The WC-23 ½-ton 4x4 Command Reconnaissance Vehicle was a specialised variant of the U.S. Army’s WC series of light military trucks, developed during the early years of the Second World War. Produced by Dodge, the WC-23 was designed to provide commanders and reconnaissance units with a fast, reliable, and highly mobile platform for battlefield coordination and forward observation.
Built on a compact four-wheel-drive chassis, the WC-23 offered excellent cross-country performance, allowing it to operate effectively in challenging terrain.
Unlike standard cargo variants, this command configuration featured an open or semi-open body layout optimised for crew visibility, communication equipment, and rapid access to maps and instruments essential for reconnaissance and command duties.
The vehicle’s light weight and mechanical simplicity made it easy to maintain in field conditions, while its versatility allowed it to serve in a wide range of roles including liaison, scouting, and mobile command support.
The WC-23 played an important role in the development of light command and reconnaissance vehicles, influencing later military vehicle designs used throughout the war.
