The M54A2 5-ton gun truck was a military vehicle used by the United States Army during the Vietnam War. The gun truck was built by adding armor plating and mounting weapons on the back of the truck to protect troops and supplies during transportation through hostile territory. The M54A2 5-ton truck was a variant of the M54 series of trucks that were introduced in the 1950s.
The M54A2 5-ton gun truck was typically armed with a combination of machine guns, grenade launchers, and recoilless rifles. The specific armament varied depending on the mission and the crew's preferences. The gun truck's armor consisted of steel plates bolted to the vehicle's frame and cab. The armor was designed to protect against small arms fire and shrapnel.
The M54A2 5-ton gun truck had a maximum speed of approximately 56 miles per hour (90 kilometers per hour) and a range of around 300 miles (480 kilometers). The vehicle was powered by a Continental LDS-465-1D six-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that produced 240 horsepower.
During the Vietnam War, gun trucks were primarily used to provide convoy security and protect supply convoys from ambushes and attacks by enemy forces. They were also used for troop transport, medical evacuation, and other missions.
Today, some M54A2 5-ton gun trucks are owned by private collectors and military enthusiasts. The vehicles are considered rare and valuable pieces of military history.
