The Northrop F-5E Tiger II is a single-seat supersonic fighter aircraft that was designed and built in the United States in the 1960s. The F-5E is part of the F-5 family of aircraft, which includes the earlier F-5A and F-5B models.
The Peace Bell program refers to the sale of F-5E Tiger II fighter aircraft to foreign countries as part of the US government's foreign military aid program. The program was initiated in the 1970s as a way to provide US allies with a cost-effective, easy-to-maintain fighter aircraft.
Two countries that received F-5E aircraft through the Peace Bell program were Yemen and Taiwan. In Yemen, the F-5E was used by the Yemen Air Force during the 1994 civil war. The aircraft were flown by both government forces and rebels, and many were destroyed in the conflict.
In Taiwan, the F-5E was operated by the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF). The ROCAF received a total of 242 F-5E and F-5F aircraft through the Peace Bell program. The F-5E was used by the ROCAF for air defense and ground attack missions, and was also used to train pilots. The F-5E played an important role in the defense of Taiwan during the Cold War.
Today, many countries still operate F-5E aircraft, although many have been retired or replaced by newer fighter aircraft. The F-5E is considered to be a reliable and versatile fighter aircraft, and its ease of maintenance and low cost have made it a popular choice for many countries, particularly those with limited military budgets.
