The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates were a class of guided missile frigates that were used by the United States Navy from the 1970s until the early 2000s. The class was named after Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval officer who served during the War of 1812 and was known for his victory over the British at the Battle of Lake Erie.
The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates were designed as multi-mission surface combatants and were intended to operate in both open-ocean and littoral (coastal) environments. The frigates were equipped with a variety of weapons systems, including anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles, torpedoes, and guns. They were also equipped with sensors and electronic warfare systems to detect and track enemy threats.
The frigates were 453 feet (138 meters) long and had a displacement of approximately 4,100 tons. They were powered by two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines and could reach speeds in excess of 29 knots (54 kilometers per hour). The frigates had a crew of around 200 sailors and officers.
The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates saw extensive service during the Cold War, and many were involved in operations in the Persian Gulf during the 1980s and 1990s. The frigates were also used for a variety of other missions, including maritime interdiction operations, search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance.
In the late 1990s, the US Navy began to retire the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates and replace them with newer, more advanced ships. The last of the frigates was decommissioned in 2015. Many of the frigates were transferred to allied navies, and some are still in service today. The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates were considered to be highly effective and versatile warships and are remembered as an important part of the US Navy's Cold War-era fleet.
