The U.S. Navy's Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate is a class of guided-missile frigates that served as a crucial component of the U.S. Navy's surface fleet from the late 1970s until their gradual retirement in the early 2000s. Here's a short description:
The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate was a class of 51 frigates built for the United States Navy, with the lead ship being the USS Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7), commissioned in 1977.
These frigates were designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare but were versatile vessels capable of performing a wide range of missions, including anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, and maritime security operations.
Key characteristics of the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates include a length of approximately 445 feet (136 meters), a displacement of around 4,100 tons, and a crew complement of about 200 sailors.
They were known for their distinctive "hull-mounted sonar dome" on the bow, which enabled them to detect and track submarines effectively.
One of the notable features of these frigates was their armament, which included a Mk 13 guided missile launcher capable of launching RIM-66 Standard surface-to-air missiles and RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
They also had a Mk 75 76mm naval gun and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, such as torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets.
The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates played a significant role during the Cold War, patrolling the world's oceans and providing valuable escort and protection to naval task forces.
