Bismarck took part in only one operation during her brief career.  She, and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, left Gotenhafen on the morning of 19th May 1941 for Operation Rheinübung, during which she was to have attempted to intercept and destroy convoys in transit between North America and Great Britain.

When Bismarck and Prinz Eugen attempted to break out into the Atlantic, the two ships were discovered by the Royal Navy and brought to battle in the Denmark Strait.  During the short engagement, the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, flagship of the Home Fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, was sunk after several minutes of firing.  In response, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued the order to "Sink the Bismarck", spurring a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy.

Two days later, with Bismarck almost in reach of safer waters, Fleet Air Arm Swordfish biplanes launched from the carrier HMS Ark Royal torpedoed the ship and jammed her rudder, allowing heavy British units to catch up with her.  In the ensuing battle on the morning of 27th May 1941, Bismarck was heavily attacked for almost two hours before sinking.

The six waterline 1:1200 scale models, HMS Cossack, HMS Suffolk, HMS Hood, Bismarck, HMS Ark Royal and Prinz Eugen, in this set represent the main ships in this action, and are a must for any warship modeller, collector or historian of any age.

History
Bismarck, one of the most formidable battleships ever to sail, posed a significant threat to the Royal Navy and Britain's crucial maritime routes, a threat that needed to be eliminated.

Following the loss of HMS Hood, the Admiralty was resolute in its mission to destroy Bismarck, dispatching a formidable task force to track her down.

This set the stage for a monumental clash of warships in the North Atlantic, culminating in the destruction of one of the world's great battleships.

The pursuit of Bismarck became one of the most significant naval operations of the Second World War, involving numerous ships and aircraft over vast stretches of ocean.

After breaking into the Atlantic, Bismarck engaged HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, resulting in Hood's destruction by a catastrophic explosion.

This devastating loss spurred the Royal Navy to launch an unyielding pursuit, deploying every available resource to locate and destroy the German battleship before she could reach the safety of French ports.

The chase ended with a series of air and sea assaults that impaired Bismarck's steering, leaving her defenceless against the advancing British fleet. In the final confrontation, battleships HMS King George V and HMS Rodney, supported by cruisers and destroyers, battered Bismarck into a burning wreck before she was ultimately scuttled by her crew on 27th May 1941, concluding one of naval warfare's most dramatic chapters.
