History
HMS Prince, sometimes known as the Royal Prince, was among the most formidable warships of her time.
This 100-gun 'first rate' ship of the line served as the initial flagship for the Lord High Admiral of the Royal Navy, the Duke of York.
Launched in December 1670, she was frequently involved in major naval battles, sustaining damage multiple times and requiring at least two reconstructions.
This magnificent vessel from the golden age of sail was dismantled in 1813 after a distinguished service career.
Fortunately, you can now reconstruct her with this captivating Airfix kit.

| Short Description | HMS Prince was a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line of the English Royal Navy, launched in 1670 during the reign of King Charles II. She was one of the largest and most powerful warships of her era, built to dominate in fleet engagements during the age of sail. As a first-rate, HMS Prince carried three full gun decks and mounted around 100 cannon, making her a floating fortress designed for line-of-battle warfare. Ships like Prince formed the backbone of England’s naval strength in the late 17th century, particularly during the Anglo-Dutch Wars and the Nine Years’ War. In 1692 she was rebuilt and renamed HMS Royal William. Under this name she became one of the most famous ships of the period and served as Admiral Edward Russell’s flagship at the Battle of Barfleur–La Hogue during the Nine Years’ War. HMS Prince represented the growing ambition of England’s navy — heavily armed, richly decorated, and intended both as a weapon of war and a symbol of national power. Her ornate stern carvings and imposing hull would have reflected the grandeur of Restoration England. |
