The Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat was the definitive production version of the famous U.S. Navy carrier-based fighter that helped secure air superiority in the Pacific during World War II.

Introduced in 1944, the F6F-5 featured refinements over earlier variants, including improved cockpit visibility, strengthened structure, and enhanced armament options.

Powered by a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, the Hellcat combined speed, durability, and heavy firepower.

Its standard armament consisted of six .50 calibre machine guns, though some F6F-5 variants were equipped with 20 mm cannon or could carry bombs and rockets for ground-attack missions.

The F6F-5 proved highly effective against Japanese fighters such as the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, thanks to its rugged construction, pilot protection, and superior diving performance.

It accounted for the majority of U.S. Navy aerial victories in the Pacific theatre and played a key role in major campaigns including the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the liberation of the Philippines.

Reliable, powerful, and forgiving to fly, the F6F-5 Hellcat became one of the most successful naval fighters of the Second World War and remains an icon of carrier aviation history.
