The German Mountain Troops, known as the Gebirgsjäger, were elite light infantry units of the German Army during the Second World War.

Specially trained for combat in mountainous, arctic, and difficult terrain, they were among the most highly skilled and physically demanding formations in the Wehrmacht.

Gebirgsjäger units were equipped and trained for operations in extreme conditions, including high-altitude warfare, snow and ice movement, and long-range operations with limited supply.

They were easily recognisable by the distinctive edelweiss insignia worn on their caps and sleeves.

Their equipment was lighter than standard infantry, often including climbing gear, skis, pack animals, and specialised mountain artillery.

These troops saw extensive combat across multiple theatres, including the invasion of Norway (1940), operations in the Alps and Balkans, and brutal fighting on the Eastern Front, particularly in the Caucasus Mountains.

Their mobility and endurance allowed them to operate where conventional units struggled, making them valuable in both offensive and defensive roles.

While tactically effective and respected for their combat skills, some Gebirgsjäger units were also involved in war crimes, particularly in the Balkans—an important and sobering part of their historical record.

For modellers and historians, German Mountain Troops offer a distinctive and varied subject, with unique uniforms, equipment, and settings ranging from snowy alpine terrain to rocky Mediterranean landscapes.
