The Junkers Ju 87B/R Stuka was one of the most recognisable and feared aircraft of the early Second World War.

Designed as a dedicated dive bomber for the German Luftwaffe, the Ju 87 combined precision attack capability with a distinctive inverted gull-wing design that made it instantly recognisable in the skies over Europe.

The aircraft was equipped with automatic dive brakes that allowed pilots to carry out steep, controlled bombing dives, delivering bombs with remarkable accuracy against strategic targets such as bridges, bunkers, and troop concentrations.

The Ju 87B was the main production variant used during the early campaigns of the war, including the invasions of Poland, France, and the Low Countries.

It proved highly effective in supporting Germany’s Blitzkrieg tactics, working closely with advancing ground forces to destroy defensive positions and disrupt enemy supply lines.

The terrifying sound of the Jericho Trumpet sirens fitted to the landing gear added a psychological element to its attacks, striking fear into troops and civilians below.

The Ju 87R was a long-range development of the B variant, fitted with additional fuel capacity that allowed it to operate over greater distances.

This version was particularly useful in naval and maritime operations, including missions against shipping and targets in the Mediterranean theatre.

Although later in the war the Stuka became vulnerable to faster Allied fighters, during the early years of the conflict it was one of the most effective close-support aircraft in the Luftwaffe arsenal.

Its precision bombing ability and strong coordination with ground forces made the Ju 87 Stuka an iconic aircraft of early-war air combat history.

History
The Junkers Ju87 Stuka is one of the most recognisable aircraft from the Second World War, known for its unique gull wings and the iconic sound of its siren, symbolising German air dominance.

Designed as a precision dive bomber, the Stuka was highly effective in the early war years, supporting ground troops during the invasions of Poland, France, and the Low Countries.

Its ability to deliver bombs with high accuracy made it a formidable asset in Blitzkrieg operations.

The Ju87's fixed landing gear contributed to its distinct profile and it could carry various bomb loads depending on mission needs.

Although vulnerable to modern fighters, as seen in the Battle of Britain, the Stuka continued to operate on the Eastern Front and in the Mediterranean, achieving success as a tank destroyer when equipped with underwing cannons.

The aircraft's psychological impact was as significant as its tactical role, with its terrifying dive attacks instilling fear in enemy forces.
