The McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 was a British variant of the legendary F-4 Phantom II, developed specifically for the Royal Navy and later operated by the Royal Air Force.

Modified to meet UK requirements, the FG.1 featured more powerful Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, providing improved low-level performance and distinctive widened air intakes compared to its American counterparts.

Originally introduced for fleet air defence aboard Royal Navy aircraft carriers, the Phantom FG.1 was equipped with a strengthened undercarriage and a nose-wheel extension system to assist catapult launches from shorter British carrier decks.

Following the withdrawal of large UK carriers, the aircraft transitioned successfully into RAF service, where it continued to serve as an interceptor and air defence fighter.

Renowned for its imposing presence, twin-engine power, and advanced avionics for its era, the Phantom FG.1 became an iconic Cold War aircraft in British markings.

Its combination of speed, payload capacity, and versatility ensured a long and distinguished service life, making it a highly popular subject among aviation historians and scale modellers alike.

Short Description	Without doubt, one of the most successful jet aircraft of the post-war era, the incredible American-produced McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom saw service with a number of international air arms, with Britain becoming a significant operator. Originally purchased to equip the Royal Navy with a modern replacement for their ageing De Havilland Sea Vixens, Fleet Air Arm Phantoms had the primary role of defending the fleet against air attack in all weather, with a secondary role of providing devastating strike support. Designated Phantom FG.1, these Naval jets were an impressive sight and are still considered some of the most attractive aircraft to have ever served with Britain’s armed forces. Operating this huge aircraft from the relatively diminutive deck of HMS Ark Royal required a number of significant modifications to British Phantoms, in addition to the carrier itself, with their successful operation dictating only cream of Britain’s fast jet pilots were selected to fly them. An aircraft that looks this good deserves to be on display, and our military aircraft model kit allows you to build this in fine, 1/48 scale detail.
