The North American Mustang Mk.IV was a British designation for later versions of the famous P-51 Mustang, supplied to the United Kingdom under Lend-Lease during the latter stages of the Second World War.
Built by North American Aviation, the Mk.IV corresponded to the P-51D and P-51K variants, representing the most advanced and widely used versions of the Mustang.
Entering service with the Royal Air Force in 1944, the Mustang Mk.IV was powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (built under licence in the United States), which gave it exceptional high-altitude performance and long-range capability.
This made it ideally suited for escorting Allied bombers deep into enemy territory, as well as conducting ground-attack and reconnaissance missions.
The aircraft featured a distinctive bubble canopy, improving pilot visibility, and was armed with six .50 calibre machine guns mounted in the wings.
Its combination of speed, range, and firepower made it one of the most effective fighters of the war.
RAF Mustang Mk.IVs operated extensively over Europe, supporting strategic bombing campaigns and helping to establish Allied air superiority in the final phases of the conflict.
Pilots valued the aircraft for its reliability, handling, and combat effectiveness.
The Mustang Mk.IV remains one of the most iconic fighter aircraft of the Second World War, symbolising the success of Allied cooperation and the evolution of long-range fighter design.
