The Westland Lysander was one of the most distinctive aircraft of the Second World War — a rugged, high-wing army co-operation and liaison aircraft designed for reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and covert missions.
First flown in 1936, it combined remarkable short take-off and landing (STOL) capability with exceptional low-speed handling, allowing it to operate from rough or improvised airstrips close to the front lines.
Powered by the Bristol Mercury radial engine, the Lysander could reach speeds of around 212 mph (341 km/h) and featured an innovative fixed undercarriage with large spatted wheels, making it perfectly suited for short-field operations.
Its open rear cockpit allowed for a rear gunner armed with twin .303 Browning machine guns, while wing-mounted fairings carried light bombs or supply containers for frontline troops.
Although initially employed for reconnaissance and liaison duties during the Battle of France (1940), the Lysander found its greatest fame later in the war through its clandestine role with the Special Operations Executive (SOE).
Under the cover of darkness, Lysander pilots flew deep into occupied Europe, landing in remote fields to deliver agents, pick up resistance fighters, and transport vital intelligence — missions requiring precision, courage, and absolute secrecy.
Though outclassed as a frontline aircraft by faster fighters and bombers, the Westland Lysander proved invaluable in its unique niche — a dependable workhorse that performed some of the war’s most daring and unsung operations.
Its elegant yet practical design has since earned it a lasting legacy as one of Britain’s most iconic utility aircraft.
