The Westland Sea King HAR.3 was the Royal Air Force’s dedicated Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter for over three decades, becoming one of the most recognisable aircraft in British skies thanks to its distinctive bright yellow paint scheme.

Introduced in the mid-1970s, the HAR.3 was a development of the naval Sea King but optimised for land-based rescue operations.

It served with RAF SAR squadrons around the UK, including bases in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and southwest England — covering mountains, coastline, and open sea.

Design & Capability
Powered by two Rolls-Royce Gnome turboshaft engines, the Sea King HAR.3 was designed for all-weather, day-and-night operations.

Its rugged airframe and advanced avionics allowed it to operate in extreme conditions, from storm-force winds to heavy snow.

Key features included:

- Rescue hoist for winching casualties from cliffs, ships, and mountains
- Spacious cabin capable of carrying stretchers and medical equipment
- Advanced navigation and radar systems for poor visibility
- Long endurance and range for offshore rescues

Later upgrades (HAR.3A standard) improved avionics and reliability, ensuring the aircraft remained operationally effective well into the 21st century.

Operational Service
The Sea King HAR.3 became synonymous with RAF Search and Rescue, responding to thousands of callouts each year.

Crews performed life-saving missions ranging from mountain rescues in the Scottish Highlands to evacuations from stricken vessels in the North Sea.

Its reputation for reliability and bravery made it an icon of British humanitarian aviation.

In 2015, the RAF retired the Sea King SAR fleet, with civilian-operated helicopters taking over the UK’s search and rescue role.

Legacy
Few helicopters have achieved the public recognition of the Sea King HAR.3.

More than just a military aircraft, it represented reassurance, professionalism, and life-saving capability — often appearing when people needed help most.

Short Description

One of the most significant aircraft of the post-war era, even though Britain’s Westland Helicopters eventually produced well over 300 of the American Sea Kings, only a small number of these machines became some of the highest profile aircraft to ever serve within Britain’s armed forces.

The robust and stable Sea King was an ideal aircraft with which to undertake the specialist Search & Rescue role across the UK, and Westland developed a number of Sea Kings specifically for this task.

Designated HAR.3 and produced for the Royal Air Force, Search & Rescue Sea Kings were fitted with highly advanced search and navigation equipment and were capable of operating in this demanding role in all weather and at any time, night or day.

Always on station in times of need, these yellow Sea Kings became some of the most famous and best loved aircraft in Britain’s skies, with crews never in any doubt as to the affection in which they and their aircraft were held by the public.

If this is a machine you've admired for some time, then the Airfix Westland Sea King model kit must be destined for your workbench.

This military aircraft kit is in 1/48 scale, allowing you to build a detailed replica of an icon.
