The HMS Ark Royal was one of the most famous aircraft carriers of the Royal Navy during the early years of the Second World War.
Commissioned in 1938 and built by Cammell Laird, she was designed from the outset as a purpose-built aircraft carrier, rather than a conversion from an earlier vessel.
Serving with the Royal Navy, Ark Royal played a key role in several important operations.
She was instrumental in hunting down the German battleship Bismarck in 1941, where aircraft launched from her deck scored a decisive torpedo hit that disabled the enemy ship’s steering, contributing directly to its eventual destruction.
Ark Royal also took part in operations in the Mediterranean, providing air cover for convoys and supporting Allied forces during critical campaigns such as the defence of Malta.
Her air group included a mix of fighters and torpedo bombers, allowing her to perform both offensive and defensive roles.
Despite her success, HMS Ark Royal was lost in November 1941 after being torpedoed by the German submarine U-81.
Although efforts were made to save her, she eventually capsized and sank, marking the loss of one of Britain’s most important naval assets at the time.
HMS Ark Royal remains an iconic symbol of early carrier warfare, demonstrating the growing importance of naval aviation and the shift away from traditional battleship dominance.
