Airfix 1/600 HMS Cossack # 01202V
HMS Cossack was one of the Royal Navy’s formidable Tribal-class destroyers, built for speed, firepower and frontline action in the most dangerous waters of the Second World War.
Commissioned in 1938, she quickly became famous for her bold service and aggressive operations against German forces in the North Atlantic and Arctic.
Designed to counter large enemy destroyers, Cossack carried a powerful main armament of eight 4.7-inch guns, giving her exceptional surface firepower for her size.
With a top speed of over 36 knots, she was ideally suited to escort duties, fleet screening, and rapid strike operations.
Her most celebrated moment came in February 1940 during the Altmark Incident.
In a daring nighttime boarding action in Norwegian waters, Cossack intercepted the German tanker Altmark and freed nearly 300 British prisoners of war. The dramatic rescue became one of the early morale-boosting stories of the war.
Throughout 1940–41, Cossack operated in harsh northern conditions, escorting convoys and engaging enemy vessels.
Tragically, in October 1941 she was torpedoed by a German U-boat while escorting a convoy from Gibraltar. Despite efforts to tow her to safety, severe weather caused her to sink in the Atlantic.
Today, HMS Cossack is remembered as a symbol of Royal Navy determination — fast, heavily armed, and fearless in action.
