HMS Nelson was a British battleship commissioned in 1927 and the lead ship of the Nelson class, designed to comply with the Washington Naval Treaty limitations following the First World War.
Her most distinctive feature was the concentration of all three triple 16-inch main gun turrets mounted forward of the superstructure, a radical layout intended to reduce armour weight while maintaining heavy firepower.
Throughout her career, HMS Nelson served as a flagship of the Royal Navy and played an important role during the Second World War.
She was involved in Atlantic convoy protection, Mediterranean operations, and shore bombardment duties, supporting Allied landings in North Africa, Sicily, and mainland Italy.
Despite suffering damage from mines and air attacks, Nelson remained operational and demonstrated the durability of her design.
Following extensive refits and repairs, HMS Nelson continued to serve until the end of the war, later acting as the venue for the signing of the Italian armistice in 1943.
Retired from service in the post-war period, she remains one of the most recognisable and unconventional battleships ever built, making her a popular and historically significant subject for naval historians and scale modellers.
