Airfix 1/600 Scharnhorst # 04206V
The Scharnhorst was one of the most powerful and controversial capital ships of the German Kriegsmarine during the early years of the Second World War.
Commissioned in 1939, she was the lead ship of the Scharnhorst class and was often described as a battleship, although her 28 cm (11-inch) main guns technically placed her closer to a battlecruiser in British classification.
Built for speed, protection, and Atlantic operations, Scharnhorst combined heavy armour with an impressive top speed of over 31 knots.
Her sleek profile and aggressive bow design made her one of the most recognisable warships of the era.
Originally armed with nine 28 cm SK C/34 guns in three triple turrets, she also carried a powerful secondary battery and extensive anti-aircraft armament, which was continually upgraded during the war.
Operational History
Scharnhorst first saw major action during the Norwegian Campaign in 1940, where she engaged British forces and helped secure German naval objectives.
Alongside her sister ship, Gneisenau, she later conducted commerce raiding operations in the Atlantic, targeting Allied shipping convoys and disrupting supply routes.
One of her most daring operations was the “Channel Dash” (Operation Cerberus) in February 1942, when Scharnhorst and other major German warships successfully sailed through the English Channel in broad daylight, evading heavy British air and naval forces.
The Battle of the North Cape
Scharnhorst’s final engagement came on 26 December 1943 during the Battle of the North Cape.
Attempting to intercept Allied Arctic convoys bound for the Soviet Union, she was detected and engaged by British forces, including the battleship HMS Duke of York.
Outgunned and increasingly isolated, Scharnhorst fought fiercely but was ultimately overwhelmed by gunfire and torpedo attacks.
She sank in the icy waters north of Norway, with the loss of nearly her entire crew.
Legacy
Scharnhorst remains one of the most famous German surface warships of World War II.
Admired for her speed, resilience, and bold operations, she also symbolises the high-risk strategy of German surface raiding in a war increasingly dominated by air power and submarine warfare.

| Short Description | One of the powerful new Battleships produced for the German Kriegsmarine during the mid 1930s, Scharnhorst was equipped with nine 11-inch main guns which made her a capable commerce raider, but unable to compete with the many more heavily armed Battleships of the Royal Navy. She was sunk by HMS Duke of York at the Battle of the North Cape on 26th December 1943, but you can bring it back to life in 1:600 scale plastic model kit form! |
