Airfix 1/72 Avro Shackleton AEW.2 / MR.2 # 11013
The Avro Shackleton was a long-range British maritime patrol and airborne early warning aircraft developed from the wartime Avro Lancaster lineage.
Serving with the Royal Air Force from the early 1950s into the early 1990s, it became one of Britain’s most enduring post-war military aircraft.
MR.2 (Maritime Reconnaissance)
The MR.2 variant was designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare and long-range maritime patrol during the Cold War.
Powered by four Rolls-Royce Griffon piston engines driving contra-rotating propellers, the MR.2 had exceptional endurance, often flying missions exceeding 12 hours.
It carried radar, sonar buoys, depth charges, and torpedoes, making it a key asset in tracking Soviet submarines across the North Atlantic.
AEW.2 (Airborne Early Warning)
The AEW.2 was a later adaptation created to provide airborne radar surveillance after the retirement of the Royal Navy’s carrier-based AEW aircraft.
Fitted with a distinctive ventral radome housing radar equipment, the AEW.2 acted as an airborne radar picket, detecting incoming aircraft and coordinating air defence.
Despite its ageing piston-engine design, it remained in frontline service until replaced by the Boeing E-3 Sentry.
Rugged, loud, and unmistakable in appearance and sound, the Shackleton became a symbol of Cold War maritime vigilance and RAF endurance operations.

| Short Description | This intricately detailed model kit of the Avro Shackleton is crafted at a 1/72 scale and includes 290 components, enabling you to construct either the AEW.2 or MR.2 versions of this iconic Cold War maritime patrol aircraft. It is designed for modellers aged 8 and up, accurately depicting the final four-engined propeller-driven bomber/strike aircraft to serve with the Royal Air Force. Key Features History Introduced into RAF service in 1951, most Shackletons were equipped with the powerful Rolls Royce Griffon engine, marking the end of the era for four-engined propeller-driven bomber/strike aircraft in the Royal Air Force. The decommissioning of HMS Ark Royal raised concerns within the Royal Navy about losing crucial airborne early warning capabilities. However, a plan to install radar systems from the Ark Royal’s former AEW Fairey Gannets onto RAF Avro Shackletons alleviated these concerns. Twelve Shackleton airframes were modified to the AEW Mk.2 standard and flew with No.8 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, remaining in service until the squadron was disbanded in 1991.
