The Curtiss P-40B Warhawk was one of the early production variants of the famous American fighter aircraft used during the opening years of the Second World War.

Known for its rugged construction and distinctive shark-mouth nose art, the P-40B became legendary while serving with the American Volunteer Group, the famed “Flying Tigers,” in China.

Powered by an Allison V-1710 liquid-cooled engine, the aircraft offered good speed, strong firepower, and excellent durability in combat.

Although later overshadowed by more advanced fighters, the P-40B proved reliable and effective in a variety of theatres, making it an important early-war fighter of the United States Army Air Forces.

History
In the early years of the war, the RAF urgently needed more modern fighter aircraft.

The Curtiss-Wright Corporation of America responded by supplying export versions of their new P-40B fighter, which performed well at lower altitudes.

The Desert Air Force decorated these aircraft with intimidating shark mouth designs, making them some of the most recognisable planes of the war, especially over North Africa and the Mediterranean.
