The de Havilland Mosquito, affectionately known as the “Wooden Wonder,” was one of the most versatile and innovative aircraft of the Second World War.

Constructed largely from wood, it combined light weight with incredible strength, allowing it to achieve exceptional speed and range.

The Mosquito’s adaptability led to countless variants — from bomber and fighter-bomber to reconnaissance and trainer.

The B.XVI was a high-altitude bomber version introduced in 1943, powered by two Rolls-Royce Merlin 72 or 76 engines.

It featured a pressurised cockpit and could carry up to 4,000 lb of bombs, including the massive “Cookie” blast bomb, at speeds and altitudes that allowed it to evade interception.

Post-war, the B.35 continued the lineage with more powerful Merlin 113/114 engines and upgraded systems, serving into the 1950s with several air forces.

Many of these aircraft were later converted into TT.35 target tugs, fitted with winches and drogue equipment for gunnery training — extending the Mosquito’s service life well beyond its wartime origins.

Sleek, fast, and remarkably adaptable, the Mosquito B.XVI/B.35/TT.35 remains a shining example of British engineering ingenuity and stands as one of the finest multi-role aircraft ever built.
