The Fokker E.II Eindecker (Late Version) was a German single-seat fighter aircraft that played a key role during the early stages of the First World War.
Developed by Fokker Flugzeugwerke, the Eindecker series introduced a revolutionary approach to aerial combat, helping to establish Germany’s early air superiority.
The E.II was an improved version of the earlier E.I, featuring a more powerful engine and refined airframe.
Like other aircraft in the series, it was built around a lightweight monoplane design, which was unusual at a time when most aircraft were biplanes.
Its most significant innovation was the synchronisation gear, allowing a forward-firing machine gun to shoot through the propeller arc without striking the blades—an advancement that transformed air combat tactics.
Late production versions of the E.II incorporated minor improvements in reliability and handling, addressing some of the limitations of earlier models.
Despite these refinements, the aircraft remained relatively slow and lightly built compared to later fighters, but in its time it was highly effective.
Flown by early German aces such as Max Immelmann, the Eindecker became synonymous with the period known as the “Fokker Scourge,” when Allied aircraft struggled to counter its advantages.
The Fokker E.II Eindecker (Late Version) stands as an important milestone in aviation history, marking the transition from unarmed reconnaissance aircraft to dedicated fighter planes.
