he Gloster Gladiator Mk.I and Mk.II were British-built biplane fighter aircraft that served during the late 1930s and early 1940s.
Designed by the Gloster Aircraft Company, the Gladiator was the last biplane fighter used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm.
Gloster Gladiator Mk.I:
First Flight: September 1934
Entered Service: 1937
Engine: Bristol Mercury IX radial engine
Armament: Four .303 inch (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns
Features: Enclosed cockpit, fixed-pitch propeller, and a top speed of about 253 mph (407 km/h)
Operational Use: Primarily used in the early stages of World War II, seeing action in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East.
Gloster Gladiator Mk.II:
Entered Service: 1938
Engine: Bristol Mercury VIIIA radial engine, slightly more powerful than the Mk.I
Improvements: Equipped with a three-bladed, two-position variable-pitch propeller, which improved performance.
Operational Use: Continued to serve in the early years of WWII. Some were modified for naval use as Sea Gladiators and were famously used during the defense of Malta.
Despite being outdated by the onset of WWII, the Gladiator played a crucial role in various theaters of war, demonstrating the bravery and skill of its pilots in a period of rapid aviation advancement.
