Airfix 1/72 Masking Set - Boeing B-17G # 65020
The Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress was the definitive and most heavily armed variant of the famous American four-engined heavy bomber that became a symbol of the United States Army Air Forces’ daylight bombing campaign over Europe during the Second World War.
Introduced in 1943, the B-17G featured a redesigned chin-mounted turret beneath the nose to counter head-on fighter attacks, bringing the total defensive armament to up to thirteen .50 calibre machine guns.
Powered by four Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engines, the aircraft combined high-altitude performance, long range, and exceptional structural strength.
The B-17G was flown extensively by the Eighth and Fifteenth Air Forces, conducting strategic bombing missions deep into occupied Europe against industrial, transportation, and military targets.
Renowned for its ability to absorb severe battle damage and still return home, the Flying Fortress earned a legendary reputation among its crews.
Although later complemented by the longer-range B-24 Liberator, the B-17G remained a cornerstone of Allied strategic air power until the end of the war.
With its distinctive silhouette, extensive defensive armament, and iconic wartime markings, the B-17G is one of the most recognisable and popular aircraft subjects in aviation history and scale modelling.
