The Nakajima B5N2, known to the Allies by the reporting name “Kate”, was the Imperial Japanese Navy’s primary carrier-borne torpedo bomber during the early years of the Second World War.

Entering service in the late 1930s, the B5N2 combined long range, excellent handling, and a high payload capacity, making it one of the most effective naval strike aircraft of its time.

Powered by a Nakajima Sakae radial engine, the B5N2 could carry either a single aerial torpedo or a substantial bomb load, giving it flexibility in both anti-shipping and land-attack roles.

Its three-man crew operated from a long, glazed cockpit, providing good visibility for navigation and attack runs, although defensive armament was limited.

The aircraft is best known for its central role in major Japanese naval operations, including the attack on Pearl Harbor and the early Pacific campaigns, where it achieved significant success against Allied warships.

As the war progressed and Allied fighter opposition increased, the B5N2’s light protection and modest speed left it increasingly vulnerable, leading to its gradual replacement by more modern designs.

Historically important and elegant in appearance, the Nakajima B5N2 “Kate” remains a classic subject for modellers interested in Japanese carrier aviation and the early air war in the Pacific.
