Airfix 1/76 Matilda Tank # 01318V
The Matilda Tank, officially designated the Infantry Tank Mk II (Matilda II), was a British infantry tank that played a significant role during the early years of the Second World War.
Designed to advance alongside infantry, the Matilda was heavily armoured for its time, making it virtually impervious to most Axis anti-tank weapons encountered during the early campaigns.
Powered by twin diesel engines and armed with a 2-pounder (40 mm) main gun, the Matilda prioritised protection over speed.
While its armament lacked a high-explosive round, its excellent armour allowed it to dominate early battlefield engagements, most notably during the Battle of Arras in 1940 and in the North African campaign, where Italian forces initially struggled to counter it.
The tank’s slow speed and limited upgrade potential eventually rendered it obsolete as more powerful German anti-tank guns appeared.
However, the Matilda remained in service in specialised roles, including mine-clearing variants such as the Scorpion flail tank, and continued to see action in North Africa and the Pacific with Commonwealth forces.
With its distinctive slab-sided armour, compact turret, and historical importance, the Matilda II is a classic subject for modellers interested in early-war British armour and desert warfare.

| Short Description | One of the most underrated tanks of the Second World War, the Matilda was a heavy British infantry tank designed to support troop assaults against enemy positions, and during early Second World War engagements, proved to be exceptional in this role.
