The I.J.N. Isuzu was one of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s dedicated anti-aircraft cruisers, created to meet the growing threat posed by Allied air power in the latter stages of World War II.
Originally laid down as a Nagara-class light cruiser, Isuzu underwent a major conversion in 1944, emerging as a highly specialised AA platform bristling with new weaponry, electronics and defensive systems.
This transformed vessel embodied Japan’s final efforts to reinforce fleet air defence.
Her refit replaced her traditional armament with modern twin 40mm and triple 25mm AA mounts, expanded fire-control suites, and advanced radar arrays.
After conversion, Isuzu served extensively in escort and convoy protection roles, operating throughout the East Indies and the Philippines.
Despite her upgrades, Isuzu was eventually overwhelmed by submarine attacks in April 1945.
This model kit faithfully captures the unique silhouette of Isuzu in her post-refit AA configuration.
Fine parts reproduce the intricate lattice masts, complex AA batteries, search radars, rangefinders and hull details typical of late-war IJN engineering.
