Chūyō was an escort aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy, converted from the passenger liner Nitta Maru during the Second World War.
Commissioned in 1942, she was primarily intended to support convoy escort duties, aircraft transport, and pilot training rather than front-line fleet operations.
With a relatively small flight deck and limited aircraft capacity, Chūyō typically operated a mix of fighters and reconnaissance aircraft, providing air cover for vital shipping routes and ferrying aircraft between Japan and forward bases.
As the war progressed and Allied submarine threats increased, her role became increasingly dangerous despite her non-combat focus.
In December 1943, Chūyō was torpedoed by the USS Sailfish while transporting personnel and aircraft, resulting in heavy loss of life and her eventual sinking.
Her fate highlighted the growing vulnerability of Japan’s converted escort carriers during the later stages of the war.
This model represents Chūyō in her wartime configuration, capturing the compact layout, straight flight deck, and utilitarian appearance typical of Japanese escort carriers.
It is an excellent subject for naval modellers interested in lesser-known IJN vessels and the vital but often overlooked role of support carriers in the Pacific War.
