Hatsuharu was a destroyer of the Hatsuharu-class, built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the mid-1930s.
Designed under the constraints of the London Naval Treaty, the Hatsuharu-class aimed to deliver heavy armament and long range on a relatively compact hull, resulting in innovative but challenging engineering solutions.
Initially, the class suffered from stability issues due to its top-heavy design, which were later corrected through extensive modifications including hull reinforcement, reduced superstructure weight, and revised armament layouts.
By the outbreak of the Second World War, Hatsuharu had been rebuilt into a far more stable and effective destroyer, well suited to escort, patrol, and fleet support duties.
Throughout the Pacific War, Hatsuharu operated mainly in northern and home waters, performing convoy escort missions and local defence as Allied air and submarine threats intensified.
Although less famous than frontline fleet destroyers, she played a vital supporting role in protecting Japanese shipping during the later stages of the conflict.
This model depicts Hatsuharu in her wartime configuration, showcasing the distinctive compact hull, twin gun mounts, torpedo armament, and characteristic IJN destroyer profile.
It is an excellent subject for modellers interested in inter-war naval design, treaty-era warships, and lesser-known Japanese destroyers.
