Kunikawa Maru was a Japanese seaplane tender operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the early stages of the Second World War.
Originally built as a merchant vessel, she was requisitioned and converted to support naval air operations, primarily serving as a mobile base for floatplanes in forward and remote areas of the Pacific.
Equipped to carry, maintain, and operate seaplanes, Kunikawa Maru played an important supporting role in reconnaissance, patrol, and transport duties.
Her facilities allowed floatplanes to be serviced, refuelled, and deployed in areas lacking permanent airfields, making her especially valuable during Japan’s early-war expansion.
Kunikawa Maru took part in several operations across the South Pacific, including support roles during the invasion of New Guinea.
In January 1943, she was attacked and sunk by Allied aircraft while operating in the region, highlighting the increasing vulnerability of auxiliary vessels as Allied air power intensified.
This model depicts Kunikawa Maru in her wartime seaplane tender configuration, featuring deck-mounted cranes, aircraft handling equipment, and the utilitarian layout typical of converted IJN auxiliary ships.
It is an excellent subject for naval modellers interested in lesser-known support vessels and the vital role they played in Pacific naval aviation.
