USS Wasp (CV-7) was a United States Navy aircraft carrier commissioned in 1940, designed to maximise air power within the limitations imposed by interwar naval treaties.
Smaller and more lightly protected than earlier fleet carriers, Wasp nonetheless played a crucial role during the early years of the Second World War.
Operating in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres, Wasp was instrumental in ferrying aircraft to reinforce Allied positions, most notably delivering Spitfire fighters to Malta in 1942.
Later deployed to the Pacific, she supported operations around Guadalcanal, providing air cover for amphibious landings and fleet movements during a critical phase of the campaign.
In September 1942, Wasp was struck by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine, causing catastrophic fires and explosions that ultimately led to her sinking.
Despite her short service life, her contributions were significant, and her loss underscored the dangers faced by early-war carriers operating without adequate protection.
This model represents USS Wasp in her wartime configuration, featuring the compact flight deck, island superstructure, and aircraft complement typical of early US Navy carriers.
It is an excellent subject for naval modellers interested in early WWII carrier design and historically important vessels.
