Attack Kits 1/72 Opel Blitz (Type 2,5-32) Wehrmacht Werkstattwagen (Hobby Line) # 72950
The Opel Blitz (Type 2,5-32) Wehrmacht Werkstattwagen was one of the most important specialist support vehicles used by German forces during the Second World War.
Based on the highly successful 3-ton Opel Blitz chassis, the Werkstattwagen (“workshop vehicle”) was designed as a mobile repair unit, providing frontline mechanical support to keep vehicles, artillery, and equipment operational in the field.
Role and Purpose
Mechanised warfare placed enormous strain on trucks, half-tracks, and armoured vehicles.
The Werkstattwagen served as a fully equipped field workshop, allowing mechanics to:
- Repair engines and gearboxes
- Weld damaged components
- Fabricate replacement parts
- Service electrical systems
- Conduct routine maintenance close to combat zones
Rather than transporting damaged vehicles back to rear depots, many repairs could be carried out on site — a critical advantage during fast-moving campaigns such as those in France (1940) and the early stages of Operation Barbarossa (1941).
Technical Overview
- Engine: 3.6L inline-6 petrol engine
- Power output: Approx. 73–75 hp
- Drive: 4x2 (rear-wheel drive)
- Payload capacity: Approx. 2.5–3 tons
- Top speed: Around 80 km/h (road)
The Type 2,5-32 designation refers to the 2.5-ton payload class and wheelbase configuration. Like other Blitz variants, it was valued for reliability, relatively simple mechanics, and ease of maintenance.
Workshop Configuration
Unlike the standard cargo version with wooden side panels, the Werkstattwagen featured a fully enclosed box body. Inside, it typically contained:
- Workbenches with vice mounts
- Storage drawers and tool racks
- Spare parts bins
- Welding equipment
- Portable generators or compressors
- Overhead lighting
Some versions had side access doors and rear double doors, allowing mechanics to work from multiple sides. Others featured folding awnings to extend the workspace outdoors.
Camouflage and Markings
Early-war examples were finished in Dunkelgrau (Panzer Grey), later transitioning to Dunkelgelb (Dark Yellow) with field-applied camouflage patterns in green and brown.
As a non-combat vehicle, it usually carried standard Wehrmacht insignia and unit markings but was rarely armed beyond perhaps a personal MG for defensive purposes.
Operational Importance
Though less glamorous than tanks or aircraft, the Opel Blitz Werkstattwagen was vital to German operational capability.
Armies march on logistics — and they fight on maintenance. Without vehicles like this, mechanised divisions would have ground to a halt far sooner than they did.
