The Heinkel He-162A-2, also known as the "Volksjäger" or "People's Fighter," was a German single-engine jet-powered fighter aircraft used during World War II. The "Post-war" designation was added later to distinguish it from the earlier versions.
The He-162 was designed in response to a German Air Ministry requirement for a cheap, fast and easy-to-produce fighter that could be flown by inexperienced pilots. The aircraft was made mostly of wood and other non-strategic materials, and it was powered by a single Junkers Jumo 004 turbojet engine.
The He-162A-2 was an improved version of the original He-162, featuring modifications to the engine, airframe, and armament. It had a top speed of around 550 mph (885 km/h) and could climb to an altitude of 39,400 feet (12,000 meters). The aircraft was armed with two 20mm MG 151/20 cannons and 24 R4M rockets.
Despite its promising performance, the He-162 saw limited action during the war due to a number of technical problems, including engine reliability issues and difficulties with the aircraft's handling characteristics. Only around 320 He-162s were produced before the war ended.
After the war, some surviving He-162s were used by the French Air Force for a short period, while others were captured by the Allies and subjected to various tests and evaluations. Today, a few examples of the He-162 can be found in aviation museums and private collections around the world.
