The Heinkel He-162D-9 'Luftwaffe '46' is a hypothetical variant of the German Heinkel He-162 jet fighter aircraft, which was designed during the latter part of World War II. The 'Luftwaffe '46' designation refers to the hypothetical aircraft designs that might have been developed by the German Luftwaffe had the war continued beyond 1945.
The He-162D-9 was a proposed upgrade to the original He-162, which was intended to address some of the technical issues that plagued the earlier version. The proposed upgrades included a more powerful engine, revised armament, and improved handling characteristics. The aircraft was designed to be faster, more maneuverable, and have a longer range than the original He-162.
The He-162D-9 was to be powered by a BMW 003E turbojet engine, which would have given the aircraft a top speed of around 670 mph (1,078 km/h). The armament was to consist of two MK 108 30mm cannon and two MG 151/20 20mm cannon. The aircraft's range was expected to be around 620 miles (1,000 km).
However, the Heinkel He-162D-9 was never built as the war ended before it could enter production. Nonetheless, it remains an interesting hypothetical "what-if" design that showcases the technological developments that might have taken place had the war continued. The He-162D-9 has also been the subject of several fictional works, including video games and books, that speculate on how it might have performed had it been built and used by the Luftwaffe.
