The Boeing F4B-4 was one of the final and most refined versions of Boeing’s famous F4B biplane fighter series, serving with the United States Navy and Marine Corps during the early 1930s.
Representing the peak of American naval biplane fighter development before the arrival of modern monoplane aircraft, the F4B-4 combined excellent manoeuvrability with rugged carrier-capable construction.
Powered by the reliable Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp radial engine, the F4B-4 delivered impressive performance for its era.
The aircraft featured a lightweight metal fuselage structure, fabric-covered wings, and a strengthened landing gear designed for the demanding conditions of aircraft carrier operations.
Distinctive features of the F4B-4 included its headrest fairing behind the cockpit and external bracing wires that gave the aircraft its classic interwar naval fighter appearance.
Armed with two forward-firing .30 calibre machine guns, the F4B-4 served primarily as a fleet defence fighter, protecting naval task forces and participating in training and fleet exercises throughout the early 1930s.
It was flown by many colourful US Navy squadrons, often wearing the vivid yellow wings and brightly marked fuselages typical of pre-war American naval aviation.
Although soon replaced by more advanced monoplane fighters, the Boeing F4B-4 remains an iconic symbol of the “Golden Age” of naval aviation, when brightly painted biplanes dominated carrier decks.
This model kit faithfully captures the elegant lines and classic appearance of this historic US Navy fighter, making it an excellent addition to any collection of early naval aircraft.
