The Culver PQ-14A/B was an American radio-controlled target drone developed during the Second World War for use by the United States Army Air Forces.
Designed to provide realistic aerial targets for anti-aircraft gunnery training, the PQ-14 helped crews practise tracking and engaging fast-moving aircraft without risking a manned pilot.
Based on the sleek Culver Cadet light aircraft, the PQ-14 retained the low-wing monoplane configuration and streamlined appearance of the original design but was adapted for unmanned operation.
It was powered by a small piston engine and controlled remotely by radio from a “mother” aircraft such as the Beechcraft AT-11 or other control platforms, allowing operators to manoeuvre the drone during training exercises.
The PQ-14A and PQ-14B variants introduced improvements in reliability and control equipment, making them more effective as high-speed aerial targets.
During training, the drones were often painted in bright colours to make them easier for gunners to track. Some drones could be recovered by parachute after missions, allowing them to be reused.
The Culver PQ-14 series played an important role in preparing Allied air defence crews for combat, helping them develop the skills needed to engage enemy aircraft effectively.
Today, the PQ-14 is remembered as an early example of unmanned aerial technology, representing one of the many innovative solutions developed during World War II.
