The Bristol Scout (Type C) was a British single-seat biplane fighter aircraft designed during World War I by the Bristol Aeroplane Company. It was first flown in February 1914, and entered service with the Royal Flying Corps in 1915.
The Scout was designed to be fast and agile, with a top speed of around 100 mph (160 km/h) and a climb rate of around 1,000 ft (305 m) per minute. It was armed with a single .303 Vickers machine gun mounted above the engine, which fired through the propeller arc using a synchronization gear.
The Bristol Scout was widely used in the early years of the war for reconnaissance and escort duties, as well as for air-to-air combat. It was particularly effective against the slower German observation balloons, which were vulnerable to attack from above.
Overall, the Bristol Scout was considered to be a successful and influential aircraft, with a number of variants produced and many pilots achieving significant victories while flying it. Its success helped to establish the reputation of the Bristol Aeroplane Company as a leading manufacturer of military aircraft.
