The 2 cm Flak 30 was a light anti-aircraft autocannon used by Nazi Germany during World War II, designed to combat low-flying aircraft and provide close-in air defense for troops, convoys, and installations.
"Flak" is an abbreviation of the German term "Flugabwehrkanone," meaning “aircraft defence cannon.”
Introduced in the early 1930s, the Flak 30 was developed by Rheinmetall and became the first generation of light automatic anti-aircraft weapons used by the Wehrmacht. Its compact design, relatively high rate of fire, and portability made it highly versatile, though it was soon supplemented by more advanced models due to some limitations.
Key Features:
- Calibre: 20 mm (2 cm)
- Ammunition: 20×138mmB "Long Solothurn" rounds, including high-explosive and armour-piercing types
- Rate of Fire: Approx. 120 rounds per minute (practical); cyclic rate around 280 rpm
- Effective Range: About 2,200 meters (horizontal) and 3,700 meters (vertical)
- Mounting: Typically mounted on a single-axle trailer (Sd.Ah.51) for mobility and quick deployment
- Crew: Operated by a crew of 5 (gunner, loader, commander, and assistants)
The Flak 30 could be used in ground and mobile configurations, including mounting on trucks, half-tracks (such as the Sd.Kfz. 10/4), and naval vessels.
Although it was originally intended for anti-aircraft use, it was often employed effectively against infantry, light vehicles, and soft targets, especially on the Eastern Front.
Limitations and Replacement:
Despite its initial success, the Flak 30 suffered from a relatively slow rate of fire and reliability issues, particularly with jamming.
As a result, it was gradually replaced by the improved 2 cm Flak 38, which had a higher rate of fire and better performance.
Nevertheless, the Flak 30 remained in service throughout the war due to production limitations and the constant demand for anti-aircraft weapons.
Legacy:
The 2 cm Flak 30 is remembered as one of the earliest mass-produced automatic AA guns of World War II, marking a significant step in the evolution of light, rapid-firing air defence systems.
Surviving examples can be found in military museums and collections around the world.
