The de Havilland Canada Beaver AL.1 was the British military designation for one of the most versatile and respected utility aircraft ever built.
Renowned worldwide for its rugged design and exceptional short take-off and landing (STOL) performance, the Beaver proved invaluable in a wide range of roles, from liaison and transport duties to aerial survey and support operations.
Introduced in the early 1950s, the Beaver AL.1 served with the British Army Air Corps and later with the Royal Air Force, where its ability to operate from rough, improvised landing strips made it ideal for remote deployments.
Powered by the reliable Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior radial engine, the aircraft combined excellent low-speed handling with strong lifting capability, allowing it to carry passengers, cargo, or specialised equipment with ease.
The AL.1 variant was used extensively for communication flights, medical evacuation, and light transport, as well as in support of British forces stationed overseas.
Its versatility, endurance, and dependability earned it a lasting reputation as one of the finest bush planes ever produced.
