Dragon 1/35 Panzergrenadier Arnhem 1944 # 6648
During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, German Panzergrenadier units played a decisive role in the fighting around Arnhem, countering the Allied airborne landings intended to seize the Rhine crossings.
Panzergrenadiers were mechanised infantry, trained to fight in close coordination with armoured units, and were well suited to the fluid, close-quarters combat that developed in and around the city.
At Arnhem, Panzergrenadiers—many drawn from improvised battle groups of training, replacement, and SS formations—were rapidly committed to contain and then isolate the British 1st Airborne Division.
Fighting took place in streets, gardens, wooded areas, and built-up residential districts, where infantry skill, local initiative, and familiarity with urban combat proved more important than heavy armour alone.
Equipped with standard infantry weapons such as rifles, MP40 submachine guns, machine guns, Panzerfausts, and light mortars, Panzergrenadiers were highly effective in ambushes and close-range engagements.
Their use of cover, infiltration tactics, and coordinated counterattacks steadily restricted Allied movement and supply lines, particularly around the Arnhem road bridge and surrounding suburbs.
Operating with limited armour support but strong artillery and mortar backing, Panzergrenadiers exploited the Allies’ stretched logistics and lack of heavy weapons.
Their actions were instrumental in preventing the British from holding the bridge long enough for ground forces to link up, ultimately leading to the failure of the operation.
The Panzergrenadiers at Arnhem exemplify the adaptability of German infantry in the later stages of the war—fighting defensively, often under-strength, yet capable of mounting effective and determined resistance in complex urban terrain.
