Dragon 1/35 Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.C mit Zusatzpanzer # 6432

The Panzerkampfwagen II Ausführung C mit Zusatzpanzer was an upgraded variant of Germany’s early-war light tank, adapted to improve survivability as battlefield threats rapidly intensified.

Originally designed in the mid-1930s as a training and reconnaissance vehicle, the Panzer II quickly found itself pressed into frontline combat at the outbreak of the Second World War.

The Ausf. C represented the most refined of the early Panzer II production series, featuring improved suspension, wider tracks, and better overall reliability compared to earlier Ausf. A and B versions.

However, its standard armour—up to 14.5 mm—proved inadequate against increasingly common anti-tank rifles, artillery splinters, and heavier infantry weapons encountered from 1940 onwards.

To address this, Zusatzpanzer (additional armour plates) were fitted to the front hull and superstructure.

These bolt-on armour sections increased protection against small-calibre fire and shrapnel, particularly on the Eastern Front where anti-tank rifles posed a serious threat.

While the added armour improved crew survival, it also increased weight and further highlighted the limits of the Panzer II chassis.

Armament remained the 2 cm KwK 30 autocannon paired with a coaxial machine gun—effective against infantry, soft vehicles, and light armour, but largely ineffective against medium and heavy tanks.

As a result, Panzer II Ausf. C tanks with Zusatzpanzer were increasingly relegated to reconnaissance, security duties, and infantry support roles rather than direct tank-to-tank combat.

By 1941–42, the Panzer II Ausf. C with additional armour symbolised Germany’s transitional armoured doctrine: a stop-gap solution attempting to extend the service life of an outdated design while more capable tanks such as the Panzer III and IV took over frontline roles.

Despite its limitations, the vehicle remained in widespread use due to shortages and the urgent demands of a rapidly expanding war.

This variant stands as a clear example of wartime adaptation—incremental protection improvements applied to early designs in response to evolving battlefield realities.
