The Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. L (Late Production) represents one of the final and most refined versions of Germany’s primary medium tank during the middle years of World War II.
Originally designed as the backbone of German armoured forces, the Panzer III evolved continuously to meet the growing challenges of the battlefield.
The Ausf. L variant was equipped with the long-barrelled 5cm KwK 39 L/60 gun, providing improved anti-tank capability against increasingly well-armoured Allied vehicles.
Late production examples often featured additional armour protection, including spaced armour (Schürzen) fitted to the hull and turret sides, enhancing defence against anti-tank rifles and shaped charges.
Maintaining the Panzer III’s hallmark balance of mobility, reliability, and crew efficiency, the Ausf. L continued to serve effectively on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
Its well-designed three-man turret allowed for effective command and coordination, a key advantage in armoured engagements.
Although eventually overshadowed by heavier tanks such as the Panther and Tiger, the Panzer III Ausf. L remained an important and versatile vehicle, reflecting the adaptability of German armoured design during a critical period of the war.

| Short Description | Dragon launches forth yet another 1/72 panzer in tremendous “Neo” collection. This time it’s a German Panzer III Ausf.L Late-Production. The Panzer III Ausf.L featured a longer and more powerful 5cm KwK.39 L/60 main gun, as well as thicker armor with an additional 20mm-deep layer on the turret and hull front. A total of 653 Ausf.L tanks were produced by German factories from June-December 1942. One user of the variant was the heavy tank battalion s.Pz.Abt.502, the very first unit to receive the Tiger I. The unit’s first taste of combat was in the Leningrad region from August 1942 onwards. This kit represents such a Panzer III L in that timeframe. Dragon’s Neo kit shows a Panzer III L resplendent in superb levels of 1/72 scale detail. The most convenient aspect of this kit is the highly detailed and easily assembled Neo Track that includes both pre-molded lengths and individual links.
