The North American B-25J Strafer was a heavily armed ground-attack variant of the famous B-25 Mitchell medium bomber, developed during the later years of the Second World War.
Designed to deliver devastating low-level attacks, the Strafer was optimised for strafing missions against enemy airfields, shipping, vehicles, and troop concentrations.
Unlike earlier bomber-focused versions, the B-25J Strafer featured an impressive forward-firing armament, including multiple .50 calibre machine guns mounted in the nose, fuselage, and dorsal positions.
This formidable firepower allowed the aircraft to saturate targets with sustained machine-gun fire while retaining the B-25’s ability to carry bombs internally and on underwing racks.
Powered by twin Wright R-2600 radial engines, the B-25J combined durability, range, and versatility. Strafers saw extensive combat service in the Pacific, Mediterranean, and China-Burma-India theatres, where low-altitude attack capability was crucial against dispersed and mobile targets.
The B-25J Strafer is remembered as one of the most aggressive and adaptable variants of the Mitchell family, symbolising the shift toward specialised ground-attack aircraft in the closing stages of WWII.
